dorky
dorkyCan I just say how much I love the show, Chuck. Not only did they use a song from Band of Horses ("No One's Gonna Love You") (a band everyone needs to get into) last night, but the super hot girl in it is named Sarah, and if you take her and Chuck's initials, you get C and S, just like me and Sarah. Gotta love it.
amusedI do love my country, despite my bitching about what it does sometimes, but I think that's okay. Not only is keeping an eye on the government our duty, but just like any love affair, you're going to occasionally run into bumps. So, with that in mind, here are two songs that I always find myself listening to on the 4th. Hope everyone has a enjoyable day!
Brett Denin, was good, sort of a more electric Jack Johnson. He played a short set, but he sounded pretty good.
Ben Folds was more than a little quirky, but it was a great performance. He was bouncing around, throwing his stool at the piano, and was just all kinds of energetic. He did a truly hilarious cover of a Dr. Dre song, and he ended his set with a rocking version of the Postal Service's "Such Great Heights."
This is my fifth time seeing John Mayer, and I've seen him go through a several stages - the folk stage, the heavy blues stage - and tonight I finally saw him work both of them together into a spectacular show. He did the songs everyone wanted ("No Such Thing," "Waiting on the World to Change," and "Bigger Than My Body") and some just plain great songs: "The Heart of Life," "Vultures," "Clairity (which was prefeced by "Victoria," which is from his debut EP that I never thought he'd play), "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room," "Good Love is on the Way," and "Belief." He also did a wicked blues version of Ray Charles' "I Don't Need No Doctor." It was great at the end, because he came out and did three acoustic only songs: "Your Body is a Wonderland," "Who Do you Think I Am?" and a beautiful version of "Stop this Train," and finished off with a blistering version of "In Reapir." All in all, a great show.
And I got to thinking, and made a couple little random lists, since I was bored today:
Top 10 songwriters I could be, if I could:
1. Bob Dylan
2. Van Morrison
3. Ryan Adams
4. John Mayer
5. Ben Gibbard (from Death Cab for Cutie)
6. Bruce Springsteen
7. Jackson Browne
8. Pete Townshend
9. Robbie Robertson (The Band)
10. Tom Waits
Top 10 songs I wish I had written
1. "Desolation Row" - Bob Dylan
2. "Into the Mystic" - Van Morrison
3. "Behind Blue Eyes" - The Who
4. "Atlantic CIty" - Bruce Springsteen
5. "The Night they Drove Old Dixie Down" - The Band
6. "The Pretender" - Jackson Browne
7. "Martha" - Tom Waits
8. "English Girls Approximately" - Ryan Adams
9. "My Sweet Lord"' - George Harriosn
10. "Georgia on My Mind" - Ray Charles
That title has nothing to do with what's in this post; it's just one of my favourite quotes from That '70s Show and I thought would grab people's attention.
So, I thought I'd start it out with my thoughts what I'm reading/watching/listening to for anyone who cares:
So, other than that, I'm just feeling pretty old, since my brother is graduating from high school Friday. We had his graduation party yesterday, which was fun (I had to laugh at how back-handedly derogative his cakes were, with messages like "You Made It!") but really hammered in how old I feel. My crazy super Catholic grandmother is coming in Thursday for a few days, which is always interesting. This time she's bringing her boyfriend, and I'm really tempted to give her a hard time for sleeping with a man who she isn't married too, but that would require me thinking about my grandmother sleeping with someone, and that's all kinds of ::shudders:: so, not going to do that.
Also, the Kohl's Sarah works at better get their arses in gear and let her know she has the time off so she can come visit, because if not, I'm just going to be listening to blues records for the next couple of weeks.
Sorry I was so rambly, but I hope everyone's summer is starting out well!
Then today I find out that Michael Buble is coming, Bob Dylan and My Morning Jacket are coming together, and so is Ryan Adams.
The icon I'm using is my bank account exploding.
So, here's my new favourite song of the week. Obviously, Springsteen's version kicks musical ass, but The Band's version is great too!
Well, they blew up the chicken man in Philly last night
Now, they blew up his house, too
Down on the boardwalk they're gettin' ready for a fight
Gonna see what them racket boys can do
Now, there's trouble bustin' in from outta state
And the D.A. can't get no relief
Gonna be a rumble out on the promenade
And the gamblin' commission's hangin' on by the skin of his teeth
Well now, ev'rything dies, baby, that's a fact
But maybe ev'rything that dies someday comes back
Put your makeup on, fix your hair up pretty
And meet me tonight in Atlantic City
Well, I got a job and tried to put my money away
But I got debts that no honest man can pay
So I drew what I had from the Central Trust
And I bought us two tickets on that Coast City bus
Well now, ev'rything dies, baby, that's a fact
But maybe ev'rything that dies someday comes back
Put your makeup on, fix your hair up pretty
And meet me tonight in Atlantic City
Now our luck may have died and our love may be cold
But with you forever I'll stay
We're goin' out where the sand's turnin' to gold
Put on your stockin's baby, `cause the night's getting cold
And maybe ev'rything dies, baby, that's a fact
But maybe ev'rything that dies someday comes back
Now, I been lookin' for a job, but it's hard to find
Down here it's just winners and losers and don't get caught on the wrong side of that line
Well, I'm tired of comin' out on the losin' end
So, honey, last night I met this guy and I'm gonna do a little favor for him
Well now, ev'rything dies, baby, that's a fact
But maybe ev'rything that dies someday comes back
Put your makeup on, fix your hair up pretty
And meet me tonight in Atlantic City
- "Atlantic City" - Bruce Springsteen
I would dig a hole all the way to China
unless of course I was there
Then I'd dig my way home
If by diggin I could steal... the wind from the sails
Of the greedy men who rule the world
Still you're my best friend
And after a good good drunk...you and me
Wake up and make love after a deep sleep
where I was dreaming
I was dreaming of a
Dream Girl
I was feeling like a creep
as I watched you asleep
face down in the grass in the park
in the middle of a hot afternoon
Your top was untied and I thought how nice
It'll be to follow the sweat down your spine
You're like my best friend
After a good good drunk...you and me
Wake up and make love after a deep sleep
where I was dreaming
I was dreaming of a
Dream Girl
Caught by a wave
my back to the ocean
it knocks me off my feet and
just as i find my footing
here you come again
Dream Girl
Dream Girl
- "Dream Girl" - Dave Matthews Band
I’m thinking today of some friends that I know
Who lived and suffered in this world below
They’re gone off to heaven, but I want to know
What are they doing there now?
Oh, what are they doing in heaven today
Where sin and sorrow are all gone away
Peace abounds like a river they say
Oh, what are they doing there now
There’s some whose minds were burdened with care
They paid for their moment with fighting and tears
But they clung to the cross in trembling and fear
Oh, what are they doing there now?
Oh, what are they doing in heaven today
Where sin and sorrow are all gone away
Peace abounds like a river they say
Oh, what are they doing there now
And there’s some whose bodies were full of disease
Physicians and doctors couldn’t give them much ease
They suffered ‘til death brought a final release
Oh, what are they doing there now?
Oh, what are they doing in heaven today
Where sin and sorrow are all gone away
Peace abounds like a river they say
Oh, what are they doing there now
There’s some who were poor and often despised
They looked up to heaven with tear-blinded eyes
While others were heedless and deaf to their cries
Oh, what are they doing there now?
Oh, what are they doing in heaven today
Where sin and sorrow are all gone away
Peace abounds like a river they say
Oh, what are they doing there now

Merry Christmas baby...I mean, uh, Happy Easter all!
For those who celebrate the season, thought I'd post this lovely Dave Matthews song (yes, I know it's called "Christmas Song" but deal with it)
She was his girl; he was her boyfriend
She'd be his wife and make him her husband
A surprise on the way, any day, any day
One healthy little giggling dribbling baby boy
The wise men came, three made their way
To shower him with love
While he lay in the hay
Shower him with love love love
Love love love
Love love was all around
Not very much of his childhood was known
Kept his mother Mary worried
Always out on his own
He met another Mary who for a reasonable fee,
less than reputable was known to be.
His heart full of love love love
Love love love
Love love was all around
When Jesus Christ was nailed to his tree
Said "oh, Daddy-o, I can see how it all soon will be
I came to shed a little light on this darkening scene
Instead I fear I've spilled the blood of my children all around"
The blood of my children all around
The blood of my children's all around
So I'm told, so the story goes
The people he knew were
Less than golden hearted
Gamblers and Robbers
Drinkers and Jokers, all soul searchers
Like you and me
Like you and me
Rumors insisted he soon would be
For his deviations
Taken into custody
By the authorities less informed than he.
Drinkers and Jokers all soul searchers
Searching for love love love
Love love love
Love love was all around
Preparations were made
For his celebration day
He said "eat this bread and think of it as me
Drink this wine and dream it will be
The blood of our children all around
The blood of our children's all around
The blood of our children all around
Father up above, why in all this hatred do you fill
Me up with love, love, love
Love love love
Love love was all around
Father up above, why in all this hatred do you fill
Me up with love, fill me love love love
Love love love
all you need is love
you can't buy me love
Love love love
Love love
And the blood of our children's all around
Buckets of tears
Got all them buckets comin' out of my ears.
Buckets of moonbeams in my hand,
I got all the love, honey baby,
You can stand.
I been meek
And hard like an oak
I seen pretty people disappear like smoke.
Friends will arrive, friends will disappear,
If you want me, honey baby,
I'll be here.
Like your smile
And your fingertips
Like the way that you move your lips.
I like the cool way you look at me,
Everything about you is bringing me
misery.
Little red wagon
Little red bike
I ain't no monkey but I know what I like.
I like the way you love me strong and slow,
I'm takin' you with me, honey baby,
When I go.
Life is sad
Life is a bust
All ya can do is do what you must.
You do what you must do and ya do it well,
I'll do it for you, honey baby,
Can't you tell?

chipper"Dear Chicago" - Ryan Adams
Dear Chicago,
You'll never guess.
You know the girl you said I'd meet someday?
Well, I've got something to confess.
She picked me up on Friday.
Asked me if she reminded me of you.
I just laughed and lit a cigarette,
Said "that's impossible to do."
My life's gotten simple since
And it fluctuates so much.
Happy and sad and back again,
I'm not crying out to much.
Think about you all the time;
It's strange and hard to deal.
Think about you lying there
And those blankets lie so still.
Nothing breathes here in the cold,
Nothing moves or even smiles.
I've been thinking some of suicide,
But there's bars out here for miles.
Sorry about the every kiss.
Every kiss you wasted back.
I think the thing you said was true,
I'm going to die alone and sad.
The wind's feeling real these days.
Yeah, baby, it hurt's me some.
Never thought I'd feel so blue,
New York City, you're almost gone.
I think that I've fallen out of love,
I think I've fallen out of love . . . with you.
List seven songs you are into right now, no matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now. Wondering if the change you'd bring means nothing else would be the same.
Did you know what you were doing?
Did you know?
Did you know how you would move me?
Well, I don't really think so.
But the night came down and swept us away.
And the stars they seeemed to paint the most elaborate scene today.
How could we know?
That song this show we'd learn so much about ourselves.
Toledo to Tokyo, the words were scribed on every page,
And now there's books up on our shelves.
Did you know how you would move us?
Did you know?
When the lights first came upon us and we saw the everglow.
And the moment's magic swpet us away.
And a young man's dream was almost seen so plain.
When was the night that showed us the sign?
Revealed in the sky to leave all behind.
But where to begin?
Throwing caution to the wind,
We reached for the st ars,
Everything was now ours.
Did you know how you would move me?
Did you know?
Did you know how you would move me?
Well, I didn't even think so.
But the moment's magic swept us away.
And it's so close, but we're so far away.
It's so close but we're so far away.
