Top 100 Movies, and other news...
Now that I've seen at least 50 of AFI's Top 100 Movies of all Time, and because Sarah asked me about it, I thought I'd compile my own "Clarke's Top 100 Movies of all Time." These are just mine, so feel free to bash/disagree if you want. There's not a whole lot of "classics," because if I put some of 'em on there, it'd just be me being pretentious, so I'm going with what I really think. Also, if you're super bored, you can copy the list and put it in a reply and see which ones you've seen (this is a requirement for Sarah, so I can see how much work I have to do =) Anyway, here it is:

I can get it to either of you right away, just let me know. Old friend, new whore?

That title has nothing to do with what's in this post; it's just one of my favourite quotes from That '70s Show and I thought would grab people's attention.

So, I thought I'd start it out with my thoughts what I'm reading/watching/listening to for anyone who cares:

Books )
Flicks )
Tuneage )

So, other than that, I'm just feeling pretty old, since my brother is graduating from high school Friday. We had his graduation party yesterday, which was fun (I had to laugh at how back-handedly derogative his cakes were, with messages like "You Made It!") but really hammered in how old I feel. My crazy super Catholic grandmother is coming in Thursday for a few days, which is always interesting. This time she's bringing her boyfriend, and I'm really tempted to give her a hard time for sleeping with a man who she isn't married too, but that would require me thinking about my grandmother sleeping with someone, and that's all kinds of ::shudders:: so, not going to do that.

Also, the Kohl's Sarah works at better get their arses in gear and let her know she has the time off so she can come visit, because if not, I'm just going to be listening to blues records for the next couple of weeks.

Sorry I was so rambly, but I hope everyone's summer is starting out well!

Worth Seeing
It was dancing near the "cheesy" line a couple of times, but I absolutely loved  "Bridge to Terabithia!" Really freakin' good movie. Not sure why I liked it so much - I guess I like sad movies. Anyway, worth checking out.

Here's the review I wrote for it, if anyone's interested: "Bridge to Terabithia"

The Science of Sleep Review

DUUUUUUUUDE!

Sorry, but like three people on my friends list had some kind of exclamation, so I thought I'd add.

Anyway, my story for the Met was a review of the Science of Sleep DVD.

A Rather Heavy Movie Review
So, this week I had to do a film review for the Met, and was given a film that  I was told was a "French film about idol worship." Well, my editor must have been thinking about a different movie, because the one he gave me was about people using the Golden Gate Bridge as as suicide location. It was a powerful movie, but pretty depressing. Read if you want.

Newspaper, for the first time in a while

So, here's my last college newspaper story for the term. Kind of weird. I'm also really disappointed, because a couple of weeks ago our campus hosted the Starz Denver Film Festival, and I got a chance to see this really good movie called "The Sensation of Sight" months before it's release (it was the world premier) and wrote a story about it. What was really cool is the director was there, and all the actors which included David Strathairn (the bad ass guy who should've won the Best Actor Oscar for Good Night, and Good Luck) and since I'm such a big "Lost" fan, Ian Somerhalder (Boone, for you Losties!). I got to talk to Ian for a few minutes, and he was super nice, and I met David, and he was very polite. Sadly, our newspaper website crashed that week, so I couldn't post the story. Anyway, I met Boone! Pretty excited. So, here's my last story for a spell. Enjoy.

King Kong at Film at the Rocks
So I went to King Kong (Peter Jackson's version) at Film on the Rocks last night (probably my last of the season) and it was awesome! Man, I love that movie! Red Rocks was the perfect setting for it because we were outside and there was all this lightning and wind when they got to the island, and it just fit perfectly. Plus the sound was freaking awesome. But I saw a really sad thing there: sitting right behind me and my friend was this little boy with his dad (the kid couldn't have been more than 6) and throughout the whole movie he's making those funny little kid comments, but when we get to the end, where Kong goes to the top of the Empire State Building, it got really quiet behind us. So then, Kong dies (if you don't know that King Kong dies, you need to go get some culture) and the movie ends, and the lights turn on and I stand up to leave and look behind me, and this little boy is in his dad's lap, just sobbing. Made me so sad, but is also a testament to how great a job Peter Jackson did on the film.

Life moves pretty fast
So, tonight was another trip to Film at the Rocks at Red Rocks, this time to see the great, brilliant, easily one of the most quotable movies ever - Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Everytime I see that movie, I remember how much I love it. The "Twist and Shout" part was great because literally everyone there was singing the song. It was pretty brilliant. "Not that I condone facism, or any ism's for that matter. Isms in my opinion are not good. A person should not believe in an ism, he should believe in himself. I quote John Lennon - I don' believe in Beatles, I just believe in me. Good point there; after all, he was the walrus. I could be the walrus, I'd still have to bum rides off of people" - has got to be one of the best monolagues ever. Going back next week for probably my last film of the season, "King Kong," which should be great.

Guitarist from the Fray's wedding tomorrow. Should be interesting. I'll report when I can!

Here's me again!
So, I'm back from my trip to Glenwood Springs (which is probably my favorite mountain town in all of Colorado). It has the best (and biggest in the country, I think) natural hot springs, so I love going there and chilling and we took this great hike (there'll be pictures of all this in a bit). It's very relaxing, and for those of you who are fanfic readers of mine, you'll be pleased to know I finally finished plotting out my latest series H/Hr, which will be, if things don't change, will be a whoppin 20 chapters! I'm not going to say what it is yet, but I'm really excited. Also, for you Firefly fans, I finally got my Book trilogy finished (and thanks to the wonderful [info]neroli66 for betaing it, and it's okay that it took a spell) so, I should be posting it up in a couple of days, when I get a chance. I may not be posting for a day or two because I work tomorrow and then am going to see "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," at Red Rocks, and then Thursday night I'm going to the guitarist of The Fray's wedding to this girl I've known for years. I'll let everyone know if I run into any rock stars. Anyway, glad to be back, and I hope everyone's doing well. If anyone posted new stories or entries I need to read, let me know.

One of the better movie quotes I've heard in a while...
So I just got back from seeing "You, Me and Dupree." It wasn't great, but it was a lot better than I expected it to be - that may have something to do with the fact that Kate Hudson's in it, but that's beside the point. The point is that in it, Owen Wilson's character kind of has a crush on Audrey Hepburn (as do I) and he finds out this girl he likes has been cheating on him, and he just says this great line, that as a single guy, I think is spot on: "There really aren't any Audrey Hepburns anymore are there?" It's just a great line, but don't get me wrong: I have the pleasure of knowing some truly wonderful girls, so it could always be worse =)

Pay Day

Ah, the wonderful day that is pay day. Of course, I go out and splurge on stuff I don't need, but that's not the point. The point is, it's fun. So here's a list of my pay day purchases:

DVD
First Knight - I'm a huge King Arthur fan and I saw this for the first time the other day. I really dug this version, which leaves all the magic and that stuff out, and just focuses on the characters. Very good.
To Kill A Mockingbird - one of the great films ever, and it's hard to top Gregory Peck's performance.
Roman Holiday - I owe [info]wieimmer for this one. I love this movie, but had forgotten about it, until she reminded me with one of her icons. I want a girlfriend like Audrey Hepburn so bad (please don't remind me of the odds of finding one though - I know they're slim). Still, great flick.
CD
Field of Dreams Soundtrack - One of my favorite movies, and the music is just gorgeous. Really sticks with you.
Sufjan Stevens - The Avalanche - This crazy guy who wants to do an album based around all 50 states. he's already done Michigan and did Illinois last year, and this is a bunch of b-sides from that album. He's absolutely insane, but it's great music.

So for anyone who cares, that's how I spent a portion of my check. Woot for pay day!

A Super confession
So I just saw "Superman Returns," - which I really enjoyed and encourage everyone to go see (Superman has always been one of my favorite superheroes) - and I just thought I'd clear something up. First off, my name is Clarke, secondly, I wear glasses and finally, I'm studying to be a journalist. Now I'm not saying I'm Superman, but you know...just in case anyone was wondering. Oh no, I've said too much. I've gotta fly...I mean run.

Randomness on my mind
So last night I watched Sean Connery receive AFI's Lifetime Achievement award, and it just brought back how much of a bad ass he is. He is hands down, the best Bond there ever was, and he's just a great actor. They were talking about his movies, and kind of skipped over "Finding Forrester," which I thought was a great film, and he gave a very unique performance with some actual vulnerability. But it was still great.

And I have to say [info]herminia and [info]aniraangel are seriously two of the coolest girls ever. They're just amazing - and it's not just the fact that they're both outrageously talented in many ways - but they're both just extremely kind and generous. Plus they take real good care of my ego, so it all works out. I just had to let 'em know how well I think of them both!

Hopefully I'll have some time for writing soon. Until then...

AFI's 100 Most Inspirational Films

So I just finished watching AFI's 100 Most Inspirational Films (I'm a big movie buff, so I dig that sort of stuff) and I was both happy and sad with the list. I mean, I was disappointed that none of the LOTR films made the cut - although "Babe" was on there - and "Forrest Gump" was way up there in the 30's when it should have been nearer to the top 10, if not in it. But, most of the stuff I would have wanted was there, even if I disagree with the order: "Casablanca," "Schindler's List," "Saving Private Ryan," "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," and "To Kill a Mockingbird" - althought I thought "Mokingbird," should have been number 1 instead of "It's A Wonderful Life," as good as it is - but that's me. Anyway, just a minor rant about it.

The joy and curse of working at a record store
It's the best/worst part about working at a record store: access to CDs cheap. Sometimes I just go on these random spending sprees and buy a bunch of CDs and DVDs which I probably shouldn't, but what the hell. Tonight I bought three Ryan Adams CDs ("29," "Rock N Roll," and "Jacksonville City Nights") - and if you don't know Ryan Adams, you need to check his music out: here's what Rolling Stone said about his music: "earthy, rich with pathos and almost disconcertingly dedicated to the idea that life's only two constants are losing a lover you probably didn't deserve in the first place and losing yourself in the bottom of a fifth of Jack Daniel's" - and the "Goodnight and Good Luck" DVD. Viva needlessly spending money!

A fun looking movie game lifted from [info]herminia
THE RULES
Pick 11 of your favorite movies.
Then pick one of your favorite quotes from each movie.
Post the quotes in your journal.
Have those on your friends list guess what the movie is.
Either strike out the quote once it has been correctly identified or place the guesser's user name directly after the quote.
Extra points for knowing the actor or character's name!!!

1. The end? No, death is not the end. It's just another path, one that we all must take; the grey rain curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass. And then you see it: white shores, and beyond - a far green country, under a swift sunrise. - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - [info]roxstar18

2. That's because we're uncool. And while women will always be a problem for us, most of the great art in the world is about that very same problem. Good-looking people don't have any spine. Their art never lasts. They get the girls, but we're smarter.

3. You're not hopeless - Lost in Translation (Bob) - [info]wingzer0

4.  Y'all got on this boat for different reasons, but y'all come to the same place. So now I'm asking more of you than I have before. Maybe all. Sure as I know anything, I know this - they will try again. Maybe on another world, maybe on this very ground swept clean. A year from now, ten? They'll swing back to the belief that they can make people... better. And I do not hold to that. So no more runnin'. I aim to misbehave. - Serenity (Captain Mal Reynolds) - [info]jeanniefillion

5. Not that I condone fascism, or any -ism for that matter. -Ism's in my opinion are not good. A person should not believe in an -ism, he should believe in himself. I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in The Beatles, I just believe in me." Good point there. After all, he was the walrus. I could be the walrus but it still wouldn't change the fact that I don't own a car. - Ferris Bueller's Day Off (Matthew Broderick as Ferris Bueller) - anonymous

6. Here's looking at you kid. - Casablanca - [info]roxstar18

7. What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music? - High Fidelity (John Cusack as Rob Gordon) - [info]azuremonkey

8. Bitches man! - Say Anything... (Little Kid by the Gas 'n' Sip) - [info]azuremonkey

9. You will never age for me, nor fade, nor die. - Shakespeare in Love (William Shakespeare) - [info]wingzer0
